Grading System
I use a weighted grading system. The weight of assessments, class work, and projects are listed below. I encourage students to complete
every assignment as each will have value in grade calculations.
Class Assignments/Participation- 50%
Tests, Quizzes, Projects- 40%
Homework- 10%
Homework
- Homework will be posted on the assignment board in the front of the classroom. A list of past assignments will be maintained in a “What Did I Miss” binder for students to review when they return from being absent.
- All homework assignments must be written in the agenda. I occasionally check students’ agendas to see if they are writing down these assignments and I stamp the books.
- Homework assignments must be completed as assigned.
Warm-ups
Warm-up exercises will be assigned daily and students must complete these assignments within the first 5-10 minutes of class in their
composition notebooks (Journals). These Journals will be required to remain in class.
Binders
All homework, notes, and classwork should be written their class binders. Students will also be expected to keep handouts, tests, and other history work in this binder. Binders will be checked regularly for organization.
Projects
There will be several projects assigned throughout the year in which students can apply the knowledge they have learned in class. These projects will have multiple parts that students will complete through homework and supplemental classwork assignments. A rubric will show students how they will be graded and what is expected from each assignment. Due dates and necessary materials will be posted in advance to ensure students
will have sufficient time to prepare for these projects.
Assessments
Tests, quizzes and other forms of student assessment will be given to check for student progress and content mastery. Tests will be given at the end of each chapter and dates will be posted several days in advance to allow students time to prepare. Parents of students who score below 70% on a test will be contacted to discuss tutoring options and to schedule a retest.
Classroom Rules
As students of this class at we will:
1. Keep our hands, feet and objects to ourselves.
2. Be Respectful to all Teachers, Peers, and Property.
3. Be Responsible and Be Prepared.
4. Always Do Our Best.
5. Remember Safety Always.
Consequences
Cheating of any kind is unacceptable. If a student is caught cheating on any assignment (i.e. homework, quiz, test, report, group project, etc.), the work will be confiscated from all students involved; they will receive a zero grade; and a phone call will be made to their parents. Unfortunately,
some students make the choice to break classroom rules which results in disrupting the learning environment for everyone else. Minor offenses in the classroom will result the following consequences:
- A verbal warning.
- A Reflection Assignment and possible loss of participation in class activities.
- A phone call will be placed to the student’s parents.
- Student detention and Parent Conference
- Discipline Referral
Situations such as inappropriate language or fighting will result in the student being sent to the Student Dean’s Office with a Discipline Referral.
Extra Credit and Makeup Work
As a rule, extra credit work is not usually assigned. Students should complete all assignments posted on the assignments list to insure an appropriate grade. Some opportunities will be offered for students in this class to complete special assignments that can help boost their grade average, but these assignments will be at the discretion of the teacher.
Students are responsible for meeting with the teacher to request and schedule makeup work. If a student misses a test she should meet with the teacher to schedule a makeup test as soon as is possible.
